Abstract
Saikosaponins(SS)are the core bioactive component found in the traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)Bupleurum chinense,with effects of regulating inflammatory response,antioxidation,and relieving the response to heat stress.They are highly potential alternatives to antibiotics.This article systematically analyzed the biological functions of SS and the progress on its application in the production of livestock and poultry.SS primarily exerts antiviral,antioxidant,and organ protective effects by regulating anti-inflammatory responses,lipid metabolism,and the immunization of cell activity.Meanwhile,they have clear effects in alleviating the re-sponse to heat stress in livestock and poultry,improving the immunity of body and production performance.However,there are key issues in current applications of SS including complex composition,low bioavailability,unclear dose-response relationships,and an incomplete system of evaluating safety.Further studying the mecha-nism of its activity,optimizing the preparation technology,establishing the standards of quality,researching and developing compound formulations are needed in the future to provide a basis for further promoting the large-scale application of SS in antibiotic-free farming.关键词
