Abstract
In order to identify the prevalence status,risk factors,and gaps in the prevention and control of bovine and ovine brucellosis in Loudi City,Hunan Province,and thereby provide a basis for regional eradication and the construction of disease-free zones in the city,a baseline investigation was conducted on all farms/households raising cattle or sheep across 87 townships(subdistricts)within all counties(county-level cities/districts)under the jurisdiction of the city.A total of 42 984 bovine serum samples and 61 226 ovine serum samples were collected using a combined strategy of stratified and full-coverage sampling.Brucellosis was detected by initial screening with the rose bengal plate agglutination test(RBPT),followed by confirmatory testing using competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(cELISA).Meanwhile,a questionnaire survey on brucellosis prevention and control was administered to 851 farms/households.The results showed that the total inventory comprised 98 274 cattle and 213 209 sheep,and the breeding structure was dominated by smallholder farming,as evidenced by the fact that 83.73%of cattle farms and 91.79%of sheep farms had fewer than 10 and 50 heads,respectively.The individual-level seroprevalence of brucellosis was 0.01%in cattle and 0.03%in sheep,while the herd-level figures were 0.02%and 0.11%,respectively.All positive farms/households were predominantly concentrated in Lianyuan City.The questionnaire survey revealed that,among the surveyed farms/households,37.4%had non-compliant disposal of aborted materials,22.1%failed to actively test introduced cattle or sheep,and some were simultaneously engaged in both the trading and slaughter of cattle or sheep.In conclusion,the overall prevalence of brucellosis in the city was extremely low,indicating a favorable foundation for regional eradication,although there was a risk of disease introduction in certain areas.Key gaps in disease prevention and control were identified,including poor biosafety awareness among smallholders,and inadequate supervision of animal movements.Accordingly,the following countermeasures were proposed:enforcing quarantine for introduced cattle or sheep,strengthening supervision of cattle and sheep movements,improving the biosafety level of farms/households,intensifying health monitoring of high-risk populations,and sustaining efforts toward regional eradication against brucellosis.关键词
