A KAP Questionnaire Survey on Dog Management and Rabies Control among Residents in Five Counties/Districts of Hunan Province in 2025
摘要
Abstract
In order to investigate dog management status, knowledge, attitudes, and practices(KAP)regarding rabies prevention and control, and post-exposure responses among residents in the pilot regions for canine rabies vaccination in Hunan Province,a questionnaire survey was conducted among 1 000 residents selected using multistage quota sampling from five counties/districts of the province in 2025.The results showed that 48.3%of respondents were dog owners, with a dog registration rate of 35.2%and a rabies vaccination rate of 37.1%in the past year.Among all respondents,89.9%correctly recognized that rabies was preventable, whereas 21.5%mistakenly believed that it was curable. The rabies awareness rate was 80.2%in developed regions and 76.0%in developing ones. The incidence of dog-related injuries over the past year was 13.9%.Among those injured,74.1%sought wound care at medical institutions, and 96.4%received post-exposure vaccination.Rabies-related information was primarily disseminated through interpersonal communication(73.0%),posters(73.0%),and brochures(64.8%).In conclusion, there were gaps in canine source management, including dog vaccination and registration, along with misconceptions about rabies among residents, rendering prevention and control outcomes highly vulnerable and posing a persistent risk of disease re-emergence.It was recommended to strengthen canine source management by increasing the registration rate and vaccination coverage, and to enhance rabies awareness campaigns to improve residents'knowledge and awareness.关键词
