Analysis on'excessive sturdiness' (Zhongjiang)theory in Huangdi Neijing

Abstract
'Zhongjiang'originates from Huangdi Neijing,yet its interpretation remains controversial.Through etymological analysis and medical theory investigation,this paper proposes that'stagnation and obstruction of the pivotal mechanism in the middle jiao'is its core pathogenesis.The character'zhong'carries the dual meanings of'accumulation'or'layering'and'heaviness',while'jiang/qiang'encompasses the meanings of'excess'or'strength'and'rigidity'or'stiffness'.The terms themselves embody the pathological characteristics of'stagnation and obstruction'.The study posits that the essence of Zhongjiang is the stagnation of qi,dampness,and essential nutrients resulting from the failure of the ascending-descending mechanism in the middle jiao.This stagnation can diffuse throughout the body,leading to symptoms such as'heaviness of the body and rigidity of the limbs'and'obstruction of the nine orifices',and may even progress to the critical pattern of'spleen death'.This paper integrates various historical viewpoints,including'stomach excess with spleen deficiency'and'disharmony of the five zang-organs',to provide a unified framework for understanding this condition.Accordingly,it establishes the fundamental treatment principle of'mediating the middle jiao and regulating the qi movement'.关键词
