Survey on the Construction of Digital Libraries of Ancient TCM Books in China:Current Situation,Problems and Suggestions

Abstract
Objective To survey the construction status of digital libraries for TCM ancient books in various provinces of China;To provide a basis for the direction and policy decision-making of the digitization of ancient books in the TCM industry.Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the construction status of digital libraries of TCM ancient books in 44 collection institutions across 31 provinces in China.Statistical analysis was carried out on main dimensions:the status of collected TCM ancient book resources(including collection volume,grading,scanning,text digitization and indexing),the construction status of digital libraries(covering resource listing,co-construction and sharing,user scale and database functions)and the related work(including standard formulation,data backup,talent teams and special supporting funds).Results A total of 44 questionnaires were distributed,and 39 valid responses were recovered.53.85%of the surveyed institutions hold over 1 000 varieties of TCM ancient books.Digitization scanning of TCM ancient books has been widely implemented in all institutions.However,among the 32 institutions with collections exceeding 500 varieties,only 40.63%have fully completed scanning,while merely 25%have finished full-text transcription and subject indexing respectively.64.1%of the institutions have completed grading and damage assessment of ancient books.71.79%have built dedicated databases for TCM ancient books,yet only five institutions have launched demonstration cooperation on co-construction and resource sharing.33.33%of the institutions adopt self-formulated digital standards.82.05%of the institutions are equipped with dedicated equipment or staff for data backup management;66.67%have professional teams for digital construction,and 76.92%have restoration talent teams.Merely 25.64%of the institutions have stable special supporting funds.The main functions of the databases are browsing and retrieval,with a relatively small number of service users,which is related to the fact that the databases of each library are mainly built and used by themselves at present.Conclusion The construction of digital libraries for TCM ancient books in various provinces in China is still in the initial stage of development,and it is scattered and not systematic.It is necessary to strengthen overall coordination,increase investment in human,material,and financial resources,and gradually promote the collaborative sharing construction of digital libraries for TCM ancient books based on a unified platform and standard specifications.关键词
