Effect of interpersonal adaptation on internet addiction among freshmen in universities of Chinese medicine:the mediating role of loneliness and an intervention study

Abstract
Objective To investigate the effect of interpersonal adaptation on internet addiction among freshmen in universities of Chinese medicine,the mediating role of loneliness,and the effect of a single-session group psychological counseling intervention on improving interpersonal adaptation and reducing loneliness.Methods The Chinese college student adaptation scale,the University of California at Los Angeles loneliness scale,and revised chen internet addiction scale were administered to 356 freshmen from a universities of Chinese medicine in Guangdong.One-way analysis of variance,correlation analysis,regression analysis,and mediation analysis were performed.In addition,a single-session group psychological counseling intervention on interpersonal adaptation was conducted among 54 freshmen,and the scores of interpersonal adaptation and loneliness before and after the intervention were compared.Results Interpersonal adaptation was significantly negatively correlated with loneliness and internet addiction(r=-0.200,P<0.001;r=-0.697,P<0.001),while loneliness was significantly positively correlated with internet addiction(r=0.398,P<0.001).Interpersonal adaptation negatively predicted Internet addiction,and loneliness played a partial mediating role in this relationship.After the group psychological counseling intervention,the interpersonal adaptation score(39.520±6.927)points was significantly higher than that before the intervention(35.870±6.149 points,t=-5.647,P<0.001),and the loneliness score after the intervention(39.410±8.553)points was significantly lower than that before the intervention(42.440±6.561 points,t=4.750,P<0.001).Conclusion Interpersonal adaptation negatively predicts internet addiction among freshmen in universities of Chinese medicine,with loneliness playing a partial mediating role.A single-session group psychological counseling intervention focused on interpersonal adaptation can effectively improve freshmen's interpersonal adaptation and reduce their loneliness.关键词
