How does agricultural modernization boost farmers' income growth?

Abstract
The growth of farmers' income is slow,and there are significant differences between regions and urban and rural areas.Increasing farmers' income still faces many challenges,and it is important to explore how to increase farmers' income.Building on a the-oretical analysis of the mechanism through which agricultural modernization affected farmers' income,this paper conducted an empirical analysis using provincial panel data from China spanning 2014 to 2023,employing two-way fixed effects models,mediation effect mod-els,and threshold effect models.The findings revealed that:(1)Agricultural modernization significantly promoted farmers' income growth,with land transfer playing a critical mediating role.(2)The impact of agricultural modernization on farmers' income exhibited multiple heterogeneities.In terms of regional heterogeneity,the effect was stronger in the western region than in the eastern region,and stronger in the eastern region than in the central region.In terms of heterogeneity across different levels of agricultural modernization,the effect was stronger in low-level regions than in high-level regions.Regarding income-type heterogeneity,the effect was strongest on operational income,followed by wage income,then property income,and weakest on transfer income.(3)A single threshold effect exis-ted in the impact of agricultural modernization on farmers' income.Once the level of agricultural modernization surpassed the threshold value,its role in boosting farmers' income strengthened further.Based on these conclusions,this paper proposed countermeasures and recommendations:advancing agricultural modernization to empower farmers' income growth,strengthening the mediating role of land transfer to promote income increase,enhancing agricultural modernization levels according to local conditions,and implementing differ-entiated policies to support diversified income growth for farmers.关键词
