Abstract

This work reports the use of response surface methodology optimize the extraction of flavonoids from corn silk. The extraction yield of flavonoids was investigated with respect to four variables including ethanol concentration, temperature, time and materialtoliquid ratio. A multivariable quadratic regression equation was built using a fourvariable, threelevel Box Behnken experimental design. The optimal conditions for extracting flavonoids from corn silk were detemained as 1.7 h extraction with 58% ethanol at a materialtoliquid ratio of 1:26 (g/mL) and 78 ℃. Under these conditions, the extraction efficiency of flavonoids was 0.41%. Oral ingestion of the flavonoids extracted from corn silk resulted in reduced MDA content in the serum and liver of mice and enhanced SOD activity, suggesting that these compounds have antioxidant effects in mice.
