An Empirical Study on the Motivations for College Students to Learn English and Their Learning Strategies

Abstract

Questionnaire survey and interviews were conducted on nearly five hundred students in Hunan College for Pre-school Education in order to understand their motivations of learning English as well as their mastery of various learning strategies. The results suggest that students show relatively low interests towards English study. Instead, external factors are their main motivation. Moreover, the overall level of students'' learning capability still needs improving. Most of our students are unable to employ different learning strategies correspondingly and flexibly to enhance their efficiency in study. Therefore, three suggestions are discussed in this paper. First and foremost, faculty should reform traditional teaching methods to stimulate students'' interests. Secondly, teachers should apply the different teaching strategy to improve English learning efficiency. Last but not the least, rapport between teachers and students should also be strengthened to build a positive psychological environment.
