Abstract

Improving energy efficiency is an inevitable requirement for the green transformation of China's economy and the realization of the dual carbon goal,and the digital economy has become a new driving force for energy efficiency improvement.Based on the"four modernizations"framework of the digital economy,on the basis of theoretical analysis,the paper empirically tested the mechanism,characteristics and path of digital economy affecting energy efficiency improvement by using the panel data of 284 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2020.The results show that:(1)the overall effect of digital economy and all di-mensions on energy efficiency improvement is positive,among which industrial digitalization has the strongest promoting effect,and the digital economy has regional heterogeneity on the improvement of energy efficiency.(2)The digital economy has a double threshold for the improvement of energy efficiency,showing the"N"type characteristics of intermediate fluctuations but overall promotion.(3)The digital economy can improve energy efficiency by promoting green technology innovation,and the improvement of green technology innovation level helps cities to cross the second threshold of the digital economy and achieve a win-win situation of digital economy development and energy efficiency improvement.
