In Defense of Knowledge:A Study of Hirsch's Society-centered Educational Thought

Abstract
Knowledge forms the premise and foundation of school education,while society represents the inevitable direction of student development.Facing the problem of education quality and social equity in the United States,American educationist and linguist Hirsch conducted a comprehensive exploration from theory to practice.Hirsch pointed out that from the perspective of school education,the key to improving the quality of American education and promoting social eq-uity lies in correctly recognizing the importance and necessity of knowledge for curriculum,education and society.For stu-dents,improving reading skills requires the accumulation of vocabulary and background knowledge.Skill development re-lies on a foundation of specific domain knowledge.Becoming a cultured citizen involves mastering standard language and shared knowledge.Assimilating new knowledge necessitates prior knowledge as a base,and it can be achieved through curriculum-based learning centered on core knowledge to narrow the gap with other students.As an education conserva-tive,Hirsch's views on knowledge and education are grounded on a societal-centered perspective.Hirsch emphasized that shifting education from child-centered to society-centered does not imply a lack of care and affection towards children.In-stead,it is the overly romanticized developmental perspective within child-centered thinking that has led to a delay in the acquisition of knowledge in the American basic education curriculum and a misplacement of care towards children.And it has deprived disadvantaged students of opportunities to learn and change their knowledge situations,which is the real in-justice for them.Therefore,schools must acknowledge the dialectical relationship between"child-centered"and"society-centered".In the stage of basic education,schools should establish a high-quality curriculum system with background knowledge,domain-specific knowledge,shared knowledge,prior knowledge and core knowledge as its core components.This will enable educational practice to progress from knowledge to society and cultivate the cultural citizens that the cou-ntry truly needs.关键词
