Evaluating the Report Quality of Randomized Controlled Trials on Sham Acupuncture for Knee Osteoarthritis Based on CONSORT and TIDieR-Placebo Standards

Abstract
Objective:To assess the quality of randomized controlled trial(RCT)literature on placebo acupuncture in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis and explore the design strategies of placebo acupuncture clinical trials.Methods:The computer searches the China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI),VIP Chinese Journal Full-text Database(VIP),Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform(WF),China Biomedical Literature Database(SinoMed),PubMed,Web of Science(WOS),and Embase databases.It collects RCT studies on acupuncture treatment for knee osteoarthritis that compare pure acupuncture with placebo acupuncture.The search time limit is from the establishment of the database to December 31,2022.The CONSORT and TIDieR-Placebo standards are used to evaluate the quality of literature reporting,and the results are analyzed and discussed.Results:A total of 20 articles were included.CONSORT evaluation results revealed reporting rates below 10%for items 3b,6b,11b,12b,14b,17b,and 18.TIDieR-Placebo evaluation results indicated reporting rates below 10%for items 6,9,10,11,and 13.The methods of placebo acupuncture included"sham acupuncture with non-penetrating needles""sham acupuncture with penetrating needles""sham acupuncture with superficial needling""non-acupoint penetrating needle"and"acupoint non-penetrating needle".Conclusion:Clinical trials on placebo acupuncture lack rigor,and the quality needs improvement.To promote standardization in acupuncture clinical research,future studies should prioritize adherence to these standards for reporting.关键词
