How does Digital Economy Boost Common Prosperity?

Abstract
Chinese modernization seeks common prosperity for all people,upholds the principal position of the people,and safeguards their fundamental interests.The vigorous development of the digital economy,a new quality productive force,shows the close connection and high coupling between the digital economy and common prosperi-ty,providing a new direction for the solid promotion of common prosperity.In cities,the center of economic activi-ties,the digital economy improves the human capital structure and industrial structure,and accelerates the pace of achieving common prosperity.In addition,with the economies of scale and the environmental damage brought about by the expansion of the urban population,the digital economy has uncertainties in promoting common prosperity. Based on the panel data at the city level from 2013 to 2020 in China,this paper uses the input-output table to test whether the development goal of the digital economy is highly consistent in achieving common prosperity.It fur-ther explores the transmission mechanism of upgrading human capital structure and industrial structure,as well as the moderating effect of urban scale.The results show that the digital economy plays a positive driving role in devel-opment,sharing,and sustainability,as well as a positive externality role in production,circulation,and exchange,steadily promoting common prosperity.The mechanism analysis reveals that improving the advanced level of local human capital structure and industrial structure is an effective transmission channel for the digital economy to pro-mote common prosperity.In addition,there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between urban size regulation and regional digital divides.Specifically,when the urban population size is low,the digital economy inhibits common prosperity.When the urban population size expands to a certain extent,the development of the digital economy is mainly moderated by the positive externality of urban size,which promotes common prosperity.When the urban population size further expands,the digital economy is mainly moderated by the negative externality effect of urban size,which inhibits common prosperity.Heterogeneity analysis shows that the digital economy has a positive impact on common prosperity,whether it is divided into eastern,central,and western regions,or central and peripheral cities. The findings may provide valuable insights for expanding the overall effect on realizing common prosperity and resolving the digital divide.Based on the above conclusions,this paper proposes the following suggestions.First,innovative human capital should strengthen its leading role to accelerate the cultivation of compound talents with high digital literacy.Second,data elements should be combined with high-quality workers to create a new quality productive force to empower the optimization and upgrading of traditional industrial structures.Finally,it is neces-sary to properly advance new-type urbanization with digital technologies.关键词
