Abstract

The issue of time pressure among university academics,particularly early-career academics,is increasingly rec-ognized.However,existing research lacks a thorough exploration of the mechanisms or root causes behind the time predica-ments experienced by these individuals.From the perspective of sociology of time,this study explores the time predicament that the early-career academics have encountered and their underlying causes.This study is based on the interview data of 27 early-career academics.It is found that early-career academics face multiple time-related predicaments including conflicts from multiple roles,fragmentation of time,lack of clear boundaries around work hours,acceleration of time rhythms,and a loss of autonomy over their time.These challenges are rooted in organizational,institutional,cultural,and interactive fac-tors.The study suggests that these issues stem from the interplay of structural,acceleration,and value dimensions of time,as conceptualized in sociology of time theory.It underscores the need for policies that ensure sufficient and autonomous time for early-career academics.
