Structural Model of Career-Choice Motivation of Pre-service Teachers:Review,Reconstruction and Validation

Abstract
The question of"why choose teaching"as the logical starting point for the teaching career of pre-service teachers is crucial for the construction of stable and high-quality teaching staff.However,there are differing perspectives in academia regarding the types and structure of teaching career choice motivation.This paper,based on the review of three typical mod-els of teacher career choice motivation abroad—"Attractors-Facilitators(AF)","Extrinsic-Intrinsic-Altruistic(EIA)"and"FIT-Choice"—constructs a"butterfly"structure model of teaching career choice motivation that aligns with Social Learning Theory of Career Decision Making.From the dual aspects of the"attraction"inherent in the characteristics of teaching profession and the"propulsion"generated by individuals'social experiences,the"butterfly"model categorizes the psychological motive factors for pre-service teachers choosing to pursue a teaching career in a K-12 school into six types:"educational value","teaching enjoyment","teaching profession advantages","teacher influence","advice from others"and"external constraints".The exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of data collected from 1471 pre-service teachers across eight universities in China in two rounds over six years indicate that the"butterfly"model possesses stable local a-daptability and can provide a new analytical framework for the study of teaching career choice motivation.关键词
