The History and Main Characteristics of Physical Education Teacher Education in the United States and Its Lessons for China

Abstract

The development of physical education teacher education in the United States has a long history,which has expe-rienced four periods:the embryonic period,the transition period,the reform period and the mature period.In the perspec-tive of professionalization,physical education teacher education in different periods shows different degrees of professional-ization,which has experienced the development from the pre-professional stage to the semi-professional stage to the quasi-professional stage and then to the full professional stage.It has also formed certain professional characteristics of physical education teacher education.These characteristics include specialized training objectives,university-oriented training insti-tutions,structured training curriculum and standardized training systems.On the basis of the history and professional char-acteristics of physical education teacher education in the United States,this paper proposes that China should accelerate the realization of the comprehensive universalization of physical education teacher education training institutions,clarify the training objectives of physical education teacher education,optimize the setting of physical education teacher education train-ing curriculum and perfect the quality assurance system of physical education teacher education.
