Creativity Assessment of Middle School Students Based on Problem Solving

Abstract
This paper selected three multiple-solution geometric problems to investigate the performance of math creativity and the relationship between creativity performance and their academic performance of ninth-grade students in a middle school in Shanghai.The study firstly compared the differences between students'solution spaces and experts'solution spaces,then examined the overall performance of students'mathematical creativity in terms of fluency,flexibility and originality,and finally analyzed the correlation between students'performance on the traditional mathematics examination and their creativity performance.This study found that the difference between the students'solution space and the expert solution space was that the expert solution space was able to come up with solutions that were beyond the scope of the ninth graders'knowledge.Ninth-grade students showed lower levels of creativity when solving multiple-solution tasks in the geometry domain.The difference between the multiple solutions given by most of the students was only in the construction of different auxiliary structures,with no significant difference in the mathematical knowledge used.In addition,the students who performed better on traditional mathematical exams showed higher levels of creativity.关键词
