The Impact of Family Capital on Access to Higher Education

Abstract
Education is a basic right of citizens.With the continuous improvement and implementation of higher edu-cation policies,China has entered the stage of mass higher education,where the competition for access to higher education is gradually shifting from quantity to quality,highlighting the role of family capital and its impact on social equity.To pro-mote educational fairness,this paper utilizes theories of cultural reproduction,cumulative advantage,and educational pro-duction functions as a starting point.It takes college students from different universities and academic disciplines as the research subjects,and employs questionnaire surveys and quantitative analysis to analyze the impact of family capital on access to higher education.The aim is to explore the pathways through which family capital influences access to higher ed-ucation,with a particular focus on the mediating effect of cumulative advantages in basic education and the moderating ef-fect of high school resource investment.The study finds that the cumulative advantages in educational opportunities result-ing from family capital can increase the likelihood of students'access to higher education by improving their performance in basic education.In addition,the provision of resources in high schools plays a crucial moderating role in the relation-ship between family capital and access to higher education,effectively alleviating the constraints that family capital impos-es on student development.Based on the above findings,this study suggests focusing on the immense potential value of high school resource investment as an important variable,and implementing a series of targeted measures in light of the current educational context and policy environment in China,so as to promote the equalization and high-quality develop-ment of education.These findings are of great significance for alleviating inequities in education and formulating relevant policies to promote equalization of educational opportunities.关键词
