Dynamic Analysis of Root Growth in Grapevine Rootstocks 5BB and'Beta'under Two-Harvest-A-Year Cultivation System

Abstract
To investigate the seasonal dynamics of grapevine root growth under Two-harvest-a-year cultivation system,this study utilized two-year-old'Shine Muscat'grapevines grafted onto two rootstocks,5BB and'Beta'.Root development during the first crop(summer)and second crop(winter)was continuously and non-destructively monitored using in situ root windows combined with image analysis techniques,while environmental parameters such as soil temperature,air temperature,and photoperiod were recorded simultaneously.Results showed that root growth under the two-harvest-a-year cultivation system exhibited distinct seasonal fluctuations.Summer crop roots demonstrated significantly higher growth activity compared to winter crop roots,with growth peaks occurring during the berry enlargement to maturation stages.In contrast,winter crop root activity was markedly reduced resulting in much lower cumulative new root growth than in summer.Root systems of 5BB initiated earlier and maintained growth longer under cooler conditions,indicating better adaptation to moderate climates,whereas the Beta rootstock showed stronger root extension and thermal adaptability under high-temperature conditions.Moreover,shoot pruning imposed an immediate inhibitory effect on root growth,especially under defoliation,leading to an abrupt cessation of root development.Correlation analysis revealed a highly significant positive correlation between photoperiod and root growth increment(P<0.01)and a significant positive correlation between temperature and root growth increment(P<0.05).The use of in situ root window observation combined with image analysis in this study enabled efficient and visual tracking of seasonal root dynamics,offering a reliable technical platform and theoretical foundation for refined root management and high-efficiency cultivation of grapevines under a two-harvest-a-year system.关键词
