Recovery Strategies of Leaf Functional Traits in Female and Male Podocarpus macrophyllus After Propagation
摘要
Abstract
[Objective]This study explores the post-fruit-abscission survival strategies and environmental adaptation mechanisms in female and male individuals of Podocarpus macrophyllus. The goal is to elucidate the patterns of resource allocation and ecological adaptability exhibited by dioecious plants across distinct life-history stages.[Methods]Leaf structural, physiological, and chemical traits were measured in both sexes of the dioecious tree Podocarpus macrophyllus after fruit drop.Independent samples t-tests were employed to analyze sexual differences in traits, and Pearson correlation analysis was used to examine relationships among functional traits.[Results](1)Female plants exhibited significantly higher leaf area(LA),specific leaf area(SLA),net photosynthetic rate(Pn),stomatal conductance(Gs),and SPAD values compared to males(P<0.05).These traits collectively indicate a highly efficient photosynthetic system in females, enabling enhanced light capture and carbon assimilation to compensate for reproductive investment.Male plants showed significantly greater leaf thickness(LT)and water use efficiency(WUE)(P<0.05),suggesting a trait combination oriented toward structural defense and optimized resource-use efficiency.(2)Female plants had significantly higher leaf carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus contents than male plants(P<0.05).This nutrient allocation pattern may reflect the need for increased metabolic activity to repair reproductive costs during the post-fruit-drop period.Male plants exhibited higher C/N and C/P ratios, indicating a resource allocation strategy favoring structural maintenance over rapid growth.(3)In females, the leaf carbon content was negatively correlated with LA(P<0.05)and positively correlated with leaf dry matter content(LDMC)(P<0.05);the leaf nitrogen content was negatively correlated with LT(P<0.05);and leaf phosphorus content was positively correlated with Pn(P<0.05).These correlations suggest that female plants enhance stress resistance through structural carbon compounds, optimize nitrogen distribution to sustain basic metabolic functions, and improve phosphorus use efficiency to offset energy deficits after reproduction. In males,SPAD values were negatively correlated with LT and positively correlated with leaf nitrogen content(P<0.05),while Gs was negatively correlated with WUE(P<0.05).This indicates that males prioritize investment in mechanical strength over photosynthetic tissue and adopt a conservative water-use strategy.[Conclusion]Female and male Podocarpus macrophyllus adopt distinct life-history strategies during the non-reproductive phase after fruit drop:females use a"high-investment"strategy for competitiveness;males adopt a"conservative"approach for survival in low-resource environments.关键词
