Abstract

[Objective]To clarify how climate change affects Pinus densiflora radial growth on sandy land of the Northwest Liaoning.[Methods]Standardized tree ring chronology for the P.densiflora plantations were developed in the Zhanggutai area in Northwest Liaoning.Pearson correlation analysis was employed to investigate the response patterns of radial growth of P.densiflora to climate variables.[Results]The results demonstrated that the radial growth of P.densiflora was primarily limited by water deficit and high temperature.Significant positive correlations were observed with the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index(Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index,SPEI)in the previous September and November and current February,April,and July-September(P<0.05).While significant negative correlations(P<0.05)were observed with the mean maximum temperature in the current March-April,June-July,and September.Temporally,the growth-climate relationships were unstable.Correlations between radial growth and the SPEI in the previous autumn(form September to November)and the current growing season(form May to September)remained consistently and significantly positive.While the negative correlation with pre-growing-season(form March to April)temperature and the positive correlation with pre-growing-season SPEI strengthened since the 1989-2009 window.The negative correlation between growth and growing-season Tx was episodically significant and became significant again since the 1997-2017 window.[Conclusion]Accordingly,continued warming is likely to intensify pre-growing-season water stress and increase the risk of high-temperature or compound hot-dry stress during the growing season,potentially reducing the growth rate of P.densiflora on the sandy lands of Northwest Liaoning.These findings provide a scientific basis for the management of P.densiflora plantations on sandy land in the Northwest Liaoning.
