Abstract

The"Instrumental Approach"is one of the mainstream theories in mathematics education technology research,mainly focusing on instrumental genesis and instrumental orchestration.This paper reviews the origins,development,and applications of instrumentation theory in mathematics education research.It was found that the theory is evolving in three directions:expanding the types of instrumental mediation,shifting from students'instrumental geneses to teachers'instrumental geneses or documentational geneses,and introducing new types of instrumental orchestrations and the concept of instrumental meta-orchestration.Mathematics education research applying instrumentation theory can be divided into two categories:one that explores the processes of instrumental genesis or instrumental orchestration,and another that applies it as a lens to explore other research topics.The educational implications include emphasizing students'processes of instrumental geneses,enhancing teachers'instrumental orchestration competencies,and fostering the localization of the instrumental approach and its practices.
