How to Turn Schools into Happy Places

摘要

Abstract

The ultimate purpose of education is the pursuit of human happiness.Thus schools should be places where both teachers and students feel happy.However,the fact is that many schools are far from being places of joyful learning.Issues such as inadequate educational investment and the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated the dual crisis of learn-ing and well-being.To address this dual crisis in education,enhance students' well-being,and support their physical and psychological development,UNESCO released the report Why the world needs happy schools:Global report on happiness in and for learning on March 20th,2024.This report introduces a global framework for happy schools,which is built on four key pillars such as"people"(the fundamental purpose of happy schools),"process"(the practical approach of happy schools),"place"(the proper environment for happy schools)and"principals"(the implementation philosophy of happy schools),along with 12 advanced standards to guide the transformation of learning,providing a holistic model that inte-grates well-being into educational policies and fosters well-being in schools through systemic change.The report provides the following insights for our country:schools should strive to improve the well-being of both students and teachers,contin-ue carrying out happiness-oriented educational reforms;create a caring and supportive learning environment,and uphold the principles of trust,inclusiveness,and empowerment.
